PHILLAUR/JALANDHAR- Phillaur MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary and Congress candidate for Jalandhar by election Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary on Monday paid rich floral tributes to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi at Company Bagh, Jalandhar and Gandhi Dham, village Panj Dheran on the occasion of his 154th birth anniversary.
Situated on the banks of the river Sutlej, Gandhi Dham is a place having significant historical value as the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were immersed here on 12 February 1948. Speaking on the occasion after paying tributes, MLA Vikramjit Chaudhary impressed upon following the teachings of the Mahatma for a peaceful and violence-free society. He emphasised that Gandhi’s ideas are most needed in today’s society, where intolerance and violence have become a way of life for many.
Calling Gandhi a “global icon,” MLA Chaudhary said that his principles of satyagraha and non-violence had inspired millions worldwide. The people in many countries have followed his path of non-violence to achieve freedom and their rights. “The United Nations recognised these contributions of Gandhi Ji and declared his birthday as the International Day of Non-Violence,” he said.
Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary stated it was due to Mahatma Gandhi that the freedom struggle became a movement of the masses. “He led the fight against the British imperial rule and involved the youth and masses in the struggle. His rise from an ordinary young man to a global statesman inspires everyone. We should follow in his footsteps and dedicate ourselves to the nation,” she said. Earlier, they paid floral tributes to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at Shastri Chowk in Jalandhar city and remembered his contributions to the nation building.
